Being Authentic

To do good things in the world, first you must know who you are and what gives meaning in your life.
Paula P. Brownlee (1935 - )
Association President

The studies and surveys tell the story:

  • 33% of women regard the desire to be in an organization with compatible values as a top factor motivating women to leave their current jobs (Conference Board of Canada, Catalyst; 1998)
  • Lack of congruence between personal and organizational values motivated women managers to leave large corporations and start their own businesses. (Moore and Buttner; 1997)
  • 26% of women in line for senior levels of management don't want the promotion. (Catalyst, 2003)

Our experiences, male and female, make the story personal:

  • Finding your placeI feel like I'm one person at work and another at home ... and I'm no longer sure which is me.
  • I'm tired of trying to figure out the hidden agendas. I wonder what we could accomplish if we all just got real?
  • I'm very adaptable. But I'm not sure that copying my boss' leadership style is the way to go.

Like many high achievers, you have probably been successful in the workplace based on your knowledge and technical skills. You produce quality results because of what you know.

But it's equally important to consider who you are. Unless you bring your whole self -- enthusiastic, engaged, fully participating -- to your work, results will be compromised and you'll feel out of place.

These "disconnects" can seem even more accute when you are also challenged by:

  • fast changing environments ... today's business world!
  • interacting with others ... managing and leading staff; organizing and facilitating teams
  • fitting in to a new organization ... figuring out how to work with co-workers, bosses, customers
  • finishing up a big project and asking "now what?"
  • transitioning through a major life event

Ready for alternatives?

  • What if ... you could learn how to be true to yourself and the organization?
  • What if ... you could develop your own effective, yet comfortable, leadership style?
  • What if ... you had the ability to effectively deal with your multiple roles and competing demands?
  • What if ... you refocused your work and life to be more in line with your true priorities?

Find solutions, support and encouragement to be an authentic leader:

Don't waste another minute! Determine what is really important to you, gather resources and support, and get into action. Aren't you worth the investment?
